# Adobe Premiere Pro for Television Editing: instructor pacing guide

## Delivery model

This is a 26-30 hours college-level intensive for students beginning with no application-specific experience. Students complete the 75-minute Professional Media Workflow Foundation first. Module checkpoints are formative; the completed portfolio is assessed with the 100-point rubric.

## Lab readiness

- Current institution-supported Premiere Pro and Adobe Media Encoder.
- A calibrated or institution-approved Rec. 709 viewing path and closed-back headphones.
- At least 80 GB of fast working storage for source and proxy media.
- No prior nonlinear editing experience is required.
- Create one clean student account and complete every guided build before release.
- Publish the exact tested application version, workspace/keymap assumptions, storage location, and support escalation route.
- Provide captions and transcripts for demonstrations, text alternatives for diagrams, and additional time or alternate input methods where required.

## Module 1: Design the project, ingest, and proxy workflow

**Student workload:** 3.5 hours

**Outcomes:**
- Inventory mixed camera and audio formats.
- Create a project and proxy workflow that preserves relink paths.
- Organize media using bins, labels, metadata, and sequence conventions.

**Checkpoint:** Submit clean ingest project, media inventory, proxy test, sequence-settings record, and repaired-fault log.

**Common diagnostic prompts:**
- Proxy and source frame differently: Check aspect ratio, frame size, rotation, interpret-footage settings, proxy preset, and source metadata.
- Audio channels are missing or duplicated: Correct source channel mapping before sequence use and replace or remap affected clips consistently.
- Log footage appears wrong: Confirm source color space, input interpretation, sequence working color space, display management, and output transform.

## Module 2: Log interviews and build a factual story

- Assemble a coherent interview-led radio cut before adding coverage.

**Checkpoint:** Submit corrected transcripts, selects sequences, paper edit, radio cut, fact-source notes, and ethical edit log.

**Common diagnostic prompts:**
- Text-based edit creates unnatural joins: Return to source audio, restore breaths and context, and treat transcript edits as provisional selections.
- The contributor appears to answer a different question: Check preceding prompt, complete answer, chronology, and whether the new context changes meaning.
- The story has facts but no progression: Define what the audience understands at the start, midpoint, and end, then reorder evidence around that change.

## Module 3: Edit picture, coverage, and multicamera action

**Student workload:** 4 hours

- Perform efficient three-point and keyboard-led editing.
- Choose trims based on story and continuity.
- Synchronize and edit multicamera material without losing source options.

**Checkpoint:** Submit the picture cut, multicamera source and edit sequences, trim exercise, and a shot-purpose annotation for one minute.

**Common diagnostic prompts:**
- Insert lands on the wrong track: Check source patching, track targeting, sync locks, and active in/out range before undoing and repeating.
- Multicam drifts: Verify source frame rates, audio sample rate, sync method, variable-frame-rate media, and production recording continuity.
- A trim breaks picture/audio sync: Use linked selection and sync locks intentionally; inspect out-of-sync indicators before deciding whether the offset is creative.

## Module 4: Build broadcast sound, graphics, and accessibility

**Student workload:** 4 hours

- Generate, edit, style, and export accurate captions.

**Checkpoint:** Submit the repaired sequence, caption sidecar, graphics source log, audio role map, and before/after review export.

**Common diagnostic prompts:**
- Captions drift after editorial changes: Regenerate or retime from the near-locked sequence and inspect every edit after the change point.
- Lower thirds collide with captions: Use coordinated safe zones, alternate vertical positions, display timing, and an approved caption/graphics layout policy.
- Dialogue noise changes at every cut: Rebuild ambience and phrase continuity first, then apply conservative clip- or track-specific restoration.

## Module 5: Finish color, timing, and programme compliance

**Student workload:** 3.5 hours

- Correct exposure and balance before applying a look.
- Run a picture-lock and compliance review against the brief.

**Checkpoint:** Submit the locked sequence, color-management record, scope captures, shot-match comparison, and completed lock checklist.

**Common diagnostic prompts:**
- Image changes after export: Compare display management, sequence/output color space, export color settings, player behavior, and viewing environment.
- Scopes look legal but the face is wrong: Scopes describe signals, not subject intent; isolate the relevant region and use visual/contextual judgment with calibrated monitoring.
- Late edit breaks captions and mix: Create a new version, document exact time change, update dependent departments/assets, and rerun downstream QC.

## Module 6: Export, inspect, consolidate, and turn over

**Student workload:** 3 hours plus capstone work

**Outcomes:**
- Configure exports from a written broadcast specification.
- Perform technical and content QC on delivered files.
- Consolidate a project with handles, documentation, and relink evidence.

**Checkpoint:** The capstone package is the checkpoint: project, master, review, captions, stems, turnover, manifests, QC, and walkthrough.

**Common diagnostic prompts:**
- Master has wrong channel order: Verify sequence track type, output mapping, export channel configuration, source stems, and playback interpretation.
- Project Manager omits media: Check nested sequences, dynamically linked items, stills, graphics, offline clips, proxy/original state, and handles.
- Caption sidecar is rejected: Confirm active caption track type, sidecar format, frame rate, encoding, timebase, programme start, and required naming.

## Assessment calibration

Before marking, score two sample portfolios independently. Discuss any criterion differing by more than five points, revise the local examples, and retain the common rubric language. Do not reward expensive equipment, preset choice, or speed where the stated outcome is judgment, organization, delivery, or evidence.

## Completion gate

A portfolio is not complete until the native project opens on a second lab system, required outputs meet the specification, the final master has been inspected outside the timeline, known limitations are documented, and the student can explain the workflow in five minutes.
