Overview
A 30-second video ad is the perfect first project — short enough to finish in one session, long enough to practice every skill that matters: story structure, b-roll, pacing, and export settings.
What You Need
- A smartphone (any modern iPhone or Android)
- CapCut (free) or DaVinci Resolve (free)
- A subject — a product, a service, yourself, or a friend
Steps
Write a 3-line script
Hook (0–5s): grab attention immediately. Problem/Solution (5–20s): show the value. Call to action (20–30s): tell them what to do next. Write the script before you pick up the camera.
Shoot 3 types of footage
Wide shot establishes the scene. Close-up shows detail. Over-the-shoulder adds perspective. Shoot each angle at least 3 times — you'll thank yourself in the edit.
Edit on the 3-cut rule
Start every cut 1–2 frames early and end it 1–2 frames late. Your edit will feel tighter and more intentional immediately, without any extra effort.
Mix your audio at −20dB for music
Background music should sit well under speech. If you can't clearly hear every word at normal listening volume, the music is too loud. Voice should peak around −6dB to −3dB.
Export at 1080p, H.264, 16:9
This works for YouTube, LinkedIn, and most platforms. For Instagram Reels or TikTok, shoot and export in 9:16 (vertical). Use 24fps for a cinematic feel, 30fps for a news/corporate feel.
Pro Tips
- Shoot in natural light. Face a window — never have it behind you.
- Record audio as close to the subject as possible. Mic distance is your biggest quality killer.
- Watch your finished cut on mute. If the story still makes sense, your visuals are strong enough.
