Upscaling and Restoring Old Footage with AI

Overview

AI upscaling increases the pixel dimensions of video and fills in the new pixels with detail the software predicts. It is used on old tape transfers, low-resolution clips and archive film. This guide is for anyone restoring footage for personal, educational or documentary use. It explains what the tools state they do, what hardware one maker lists, the difference between local and cloud processing, and the main risk: a tool adds detail the original never held. We did not test any tool on this page. Each statement about a tool comes from the maker's own page as read on 8 October 2026, and the Sources section says what each page established.

What You Need

  • The best copy of the footage you hold, not a compressed re-upload
  • A backup of the original before anything is processed
  • For local tools, a computer meeting the maker's listed requirements
  • A short test clip, 10 to 20 seconds, before you commit to a full run

Steps

1

Secure the source first

Copy the original to a second drive. Upscaling cannot recover what a compressed copy discarded, so start from the highest-quality version you have. For tape, capture it before it degrades further.

2

Pick local or cloud

Topaz states that with local rendering "your files never leave your computer" and it also offers cloud rendering. TensorPix states processing happens in the cloud on remote GPUs in a browser, with no local installation. Local suits confidential or archival material. Cloud suits a weak computer and a short clip.

3

Check the hardware

Topaz lists over 20 AI models for upscaling, denoising, sharpening, stabilization and frame interpolation, for Mac and Windows. Its current requirements page was not reachable. A legacy page lists 6 GB of graphics memory as a Windows minimum and 8 GB as recommended, with 16 GB of RAM, and says it might not match current versions. Check the current page.

4

Test a short clip and compare frame by frame

Process a short clip with the lightest setting. Put the original beside the result and step through frames. Look at faces, text and fine patterns, where a model tends to invent detail. A face that looks sharper but is subtly a different face is a failure, even if it looks good.

5

Process the full run and label it

Run the full file once you are happy with the settings. State on screen or in the description that the footage was enhanced. For documentary and news work, do not present upscaled detail as evidence of what the camera recorded.

Pro Tips

  • TensorPix's page estimates five to ten minutes of processing for each minute of standard-definition video. Plan time for long files.
  • Upscayl, the free open source app, handles still images only. Extract frames if you want to use it on footage, and it needs a Vulkan-compatible graphics card.
  • Deinterlace tape footage before upscaling when your tool does not do it itself.

Background and Detail

Upscaling is prediction, not recovery, and that shapes every decision you make about it.

Why a sharper picture is not a truer picture

A low-resolution frame does not contain the detail of a high-resolution one. The model supplies plausible detail from patterns it learned. For foliage or texture that is fine. On a face it changes the person's features, and on text it produces letters that read cleanly and are wrong. The Upscayl page itself notes it cannot de-blur or adjust focus. Treat the result as an illustration of the original, and keep the original available.

What broadcasters are doing

Telestream announced Vantage Super Resolution on 2 September 2026, for release in the fourth quarter of 2026 on Vantage Lightspeed servers with NVIDIA GPUs. Its own product page does not mention it, and we read only press coverage, so treat the status as reported, not confirmed. Archive restoration houses use dedicated systems that are sold by quotation and are not covered here.

Where This Fits

Upscaling works on whatever the camera recorded, and Video Production Fundamentals covers the planning, camera and delivery choices that decide what that is.

FAQ

Q: Does upscaling to 4K make old footage 4K quality?
A: No. It makes a 4K-sized file. The detail is predicted. A tool's output is as truthful as its prediction.

Q: Is there a free option?
A: Upscayl is free and open source for still images. TensorPix states an allowance of about five minutes of free video enhancement. Neither was tested here.

Q: Do I need to disclose that footage was upscaled?
A: In documentary and journalism, yes. State it. The labelling page covers disclosure.

Vocabulary

Upscaling Increasing the pixel dimensions of an image or video. AI upscaling predicts new pixels from learned patterns, where older methods averaged neighbouring pixels. The result is larger, not necessarily more accurate.

Frame interpolation Creating new frames between existing ones to raise the frame rate or slow motion. The software estimates movement, and fast or complex motion produces visible errors such as smeared edges or doubled limbs.

Deinterlacing Converting video recorded as alternating lines, common on tape, into complete frames. Poor deinterlacing leaves comb-like edges on moving objects, and upscaling then enlarges those flaws.
