Overview

Alexander Stepanovich Popov (1859โ€“1906) demonstrated a coherer-based receiver with an aerial wire to the Russian Physical and Chemical Society in May 1895, using it as a lightning detector, and by 1896 was transmitting and receiving over short distances. Soviet and Russian accounts have long presented him as radio's inventor; Western accounts generally do not.

The problem as it stood

Hertz's detector was a spark gap visible only in a darkened room at close range. Practical wireless needed a receiver sensitive enough to register a weak distant signal and produce an unambiguous output.

What he actually did

Popov built a receiver combining Branly's coherer with an elevated aerial wire and an automatic tapper to reset the coherer between signals, demonstrating it in May 1895 as a thunderstorm detector. He subsequently used the apparatus for ship-to-shore communication with the Russian navy.

How it worked

The elevated aerial is the significant part. It couples far more energy from the passing wave than a small loop, and the automatic tapper makes the coherer a repeating rather than a one-shot detector. Both are essential to a usable receiver, and both appear in Marconi's systems too.

Russian naval wireless, and a genuine second line of development. Popov's work was published and known, and the aerial-plus-coherer-plus-tapper arrangement was common to essentially all early practical receivers.

What happened to him

He continued at the Electrotechnical Institute in St Petersburg, becoming its director, and died in 1906 at 46. Radio Day is still marked in Russia on 7 May, the anniversary of his 1895 demonstration.
