The problem as it stood

Marey built a device with a single lens and a rotating shutter and plate, capable of twelve exposures per second from one fixed viewpoint. He later moved to paper roll film, recording sequences on a continuous strip.

A clockwork mechanism advanced a circular photographic plate behind a rotating slotted disc, so successive exposures fell on successive sectors.
