Overview

Georges Méliès (1861–1938) was a stage illusionist who bought a camera when the Lumières would not sell him theirs, and turned film into an effects medium. Substitution splices, multiple exposure, matte work, dissolves and hand-colouring were all developed or systematised in his Montreuil studio across several hundred films.

The problem as it stood

Early film was understood as a recording device: point it at something and capture what happened. Nobody had established that the medium could show things that never happened in front of the lens.

What he actually did

Méliès discovered the substitution splice — reportedly when his camera jammed in the street and the resulting film showed one vehicle apparently transforming into another — and built a systematic practice from it: stopping the camera to change the scene, exposing the same film twice, masking part of the frame and exposing the rest later, dissolving between shots.

How it worked

All of it exploits the fact that film records discontinuously and the audience infers continuity. Stop the camera, alter the scene, restart, and the cut is invisible. Mask half the gate, rewind, mask the other half and shoot again, and one performer appears twice. These are in-camera compositing techniques, and the logic is identical to modern digital compositing — only the tools differ.

What it made possible

The entire visual effects tradition, and the understanding that cinema is a constructed medium rather than a recording one. A Trip to the Moon (1902) remains the best-known early demonstration of the whole toolkit.

What happened to him

His style was overtaken, his business failed, and he reportedly burned negatives in frustration; much of his output was lost or melted down for the celluloid. He was found selling toys at a Paris station kiosk in the 1920s and was subsequently honoured before his death in 1938.

The substitution splice is the famous trick, but masking is the one with the longest reach. Expose part of the frame, wind back, mask the exposed area and expose the rest — and two things filmed at different times occupy one image.
