Sir John Ambrose Fleming (1849โ1945) patented the thermionic valve โ the oscillation valve, or diode โ in 1904, using the fact that a heated filament in a vacuum emits electrons that flow to a positively charged plate but not the reverse. The problem as it stood
The coherer was a poor detector: it needed mechanical tapping to reset, responded to signal presence rather than shape, and could not follow a modulated waveform. Detecting speech, rather than telegraph pulses, required something that rectified continuously.
What he actually did
Fleming, working as a consultant to the Marconi company and drawing on the Edison effect he had studied years earlier, enclosed a heated filament and a plate in an evacuated bulb and showed the arrangement passes current in only one direction. Patented in 1904, it became the first electronic component.
How it worked
A hot filament boils off electrons. A positively charged plate attracts them; a negatively charged plate does not, and the cold plate emits nothing. The device therefore rectifies โ and rectification is exactly what demodulating a radio signal requires, because it recovers the envelope of the carrier.
What it made possible
Reliable detection, and then โ once de Forest added a control grid two years later โ amplification, which is the precondition for broadcasting, for the condenser microphone, for sound film and for magnetic recording. The valve era runs to the transistor.
What happened to him
Fleming was a professor at University College London, an accomplished lecturer, and was knighted in 1929. He litigated with de Forest over the relationship between the diode and the Audion. He died in 1945.
