Overview

John Logie Baird (1888โ€“1946) gave the first demonstration of live moving television images with tonal gradation, in January 1926, and in 1928 achieved both the first transatlantic television transmission and the first colour television transmission. All of it used mechanical scanning. When his 240-line system was tested against Marconi-EMI's electronic 405-line system on the BBC from November 1936, it was dropped within three months.

The problem as it stood

By the mid-1920s several people had transmitted crude silhouettes or shadowgraphs. Nobody had shown a moving image with genuine tonal gradation โ€” actual greys, an actual face โ€” which is the difference between a laboratory curiosity and something recognisable as television.

Working in an attic in Soho on a shoestring, Baird built a Nipkow-disc system sensitive enough to resolve halftones, and on 26 January 1926 demonstrated it to members of the Royal Institution. He followed with transatlantic transmission from London to Hartsdale, New York, and a colour demonstration using three-colour sequential scanning, both in 1928.

How it worked

A Nipkow disc scanned the subject; photoelectric cells picked up the reflected light; the amplified signal modulated a neon lamp behind a synchronised disc at the receiver. Baird's real contribution was engineering sensitivity and synchronisation out of components that were barely adequate โ€” better amplification and much brighter illumination than anyone else had managed.

Why mechanical scanning could not win

Resolution in a disc system is set by the number of holes, and more holes means either a bigger disc or smaller holes. A bigger disc becomes dangerous and unwieldy; smaller holes admit less light, so the picture gets dimmer exactly as it gets sharper. The camera also has to be physically close to a large spinning object, which makes it immobile. Electronic scanning has none of these limits, which is why 405 lines beat 240 decisively.
