Overview
Lev Sergeyevich Termen (1896–1993), known in the West as Léon Theremin, invented the theremin around 1920 while researching proximity sensors. It is played by moving the hands near two antennas, one controlling pitch and one volume, without touching the instrument. RCA licensed and manufactured it, making it the first mass-produced electronic instrument.

The problem as it stood
Electronic sound generation existed in laboratories, but there was no way to perform with it expressively. Instruments require continuous, immediate control over pitch and loudness, and no electronic device offered that.
What he actually did
Theremin found that a human hand approaching an antenna alters the frequency of an oscillator circuit measurably. He built an instrument around that: one antenna controls pitch through hand distance, a second loop controls volume, and the performer plays entirely in the air.

Two radio-frequency oscillators, one fixed and one whose frequency shifts with the hand's capacitance, are mixed. The audible output is the difference between them — heterodyning, the same principle as Armstrong's superheterodyne receiver, used here to make music rather than to receive it.
