
Overview
Vladimir Kosma Zworykin (1888โ1982) developed the iconoscope, a charge-storage camera tube sensitive enough to shoot in a television studio, and the kinescope receiving tube to go with it. He filed a television application in 1923 whose apparatus was never successfully demonstrated and which did not issue until 1938. He lost the 1935 priority interference to Farnsworth. The iconoscope is nevertheless the tube on which broadcast television was built.

The problem as it stood
Farnsworth had proved electronic scanning worked, but the image dissector had no charge storage and therefore needed punishing levels of light. For television to be a broadcast medium rather than a demonstration, someone had to build a camera tube that worked at ordinary studio light levels.
What he actually did
Zworykin, who had studied under Rosing in St Petersburg, worked at Westinghouse and then RCA and developed the iconoscope: a mosaic target of photosensitive globules on mica that accumulate charge between scans. The working tube came in 1931; it was named in October 1931 and presented to RCA in 1932. He had already developed the kinescope receiving tube in 1929.
How it worked
Light falls on a mosaic of tiny photoemissive elements, each insulated from its neighbours and each accumulating positive charge in proportion to the light it receives, throughout the whole frame. The scanning beam sweeps the mosaic, discharging each element in turn and producing the signal. Because charge builds across the frame rather than only at the instant of scanning, sensitivity is orders of magnitude better than the dissector's.
What it made possible
The iconoscope, with RCA's manufacturing and standards weight behind it, is what made scheduled electronic television broadcasting practical. Its successors โ the image orthicon and the vidicon โ carried studio and outside-broadcast television until solid-state sensors arrived. Zworykin also did important work on the electron microscope and infrared imaging.

He became a director at RCA Laboratories, was widely honoured, and lived to 1982. His public reputation as "the father of television" was substantially built by RCA's publicity, and has been steadily qualified by historians since.
