Once celluloid roll film existed, moving pictures needed a physical standard: how wide, how the film is transported, how it is registered so each frame stops precisely in the gate. Without agreement, nothing made on one machine plays on another.

Dickson worked out the practical answers: 35mm wide stock, four perforations per frame, and an escapement mechanism holding each frame still during exposure. The resulting frame is about 1.33:1. He also built the Black Maria studio and shot much of the earliest Edison material.

Intermittent motion is the whole problem: film must move continuously through the mechanism yet be motionless at the instant of exposure. Perforations plus an escapement give precise, repeatable registration. Get it wrong and the image weaves; get it right and the format is stable enough to standardise an industry.
