Prerequisites and materials

No professional equipment is required. Use a phone or camera, any microphone available to you, headphones, and a free editor such as DaVinci Resolve, Audacity, or REAPER. You also need 5-10 GB of working storage and permission from anyone identifiable in the capstone.

Module 1 of 6

Purpose, audience, and story

Production quality begins before a camera or recorder is turned on. This module defines who the work serves, what it should change, and which evidence belongs in the story.

Module outcomes

Write a one-page creative brief, identify an ethical evidence boundary, and turn the brief into a beginning-middle-end sequence.

Lab: one-minute evidence story

Choose a local process that can be shown ethically. Write a 120-word brief, identify three verifiable facts, and produce a six-shot plan with an opening question, evidence sequence, and closing answer.

Knowledge check

Can another person identify the audience, intended change, evidence, and ethical boundary from the brief alone? If any answer is unclear, revise before capture.

Image, light, and visual continuity

Camera settings are storytelling controls. Learn what changes when exposure, frame rate, shutter, focal length, and shot size move.

Module outcomes

Expose a face consistently, choose a frame rate for motion, build a readable shot sequence, and record visual continuity notes.

Lab: continuity sequence

Film one simple action in six shots. Match screen direction, action, eyeline, exposure, and color temperature. Record the settings and explain why each shot exists.

Review without sound. Does the sequence still communicate location, action, detail, and change? Identify one shot that can be removed without losing meaning.

Sound capture and signal control

Audiences tolerate modest images more easily than unintelligible speech. This module treats microphone position, room sound, gain, noise, and monitoring as one system.

Select a microphone pattern, set conservative recording gain, identify noise sources, and capture speech that survives post-production.

Lab: microphone distance test

Record the same 20-second passage at three distances without changing the room. Match playback loudness, compare direct-to-room ratio, noise, plosives, and tonal change, then choose the strongest setup.

Knowledge check

Explain why moving a microphone is often a better first intervention than adding noise reduction, EQ, or compression later.

Editing picture and sound

Editing is structured attention. Make every cut, level move, color adjustment, and sound layer serve comprehension or feeling.

Build a coherent rough cut, control dialogue dynamics, remove distractions, and create a restrained color and sound pass.

Lab: three-pass edit

Complete a story pass, a clarity pass, and a polish pass. Save each version. In a short edit note, list what changed, what remained unresolved, and what evidence drove each decision.

Watch once with the image hidden and once with sound muted. Does each channel still carry essential information without contradicting the other?

Accessibility, rights, and provenance

A finished edit is not ready if people cannot perceive it, understand it, or evaluate where it came from. Build access and trust into the package.

Module outcomes

Create edited captions and a transcript, check visual readability, document permissions, and write a plain-language provenance note.

Lab: access and provenance package

Create an SRT or VTT file, a readable transcript, descriptive alt text for the thumbnail, a rights log, and a short note describing capture, editing, AI use, and known limitations.

Knowledge check

Ask another person to review the package without watching the original production process. Can they understand the work, access its meaning, and identify what was altered?

Delivery, quality control, and reflection

Delivery is a separate engineering task. Define the destination, export deliberately, inspect the actual output, and leave a record another person can reproduce.

Module outcomes

Write a delivery specification, create a master and access files, complete a QC pass, and archive the project with a clear handoff.

Lab: blind delivery review

Give the exported package and delivery note to someone who did not edit it. They should be able to identify files, play the master, enable captions, locate the transcript, understand provenance, and reproduce the QC checks.

List three defects that can appear in an export even when the editing timeline is correct. State where each defect should be detected and who owns the fix.

Capstone: a short accessible evidence story

Produce a 60-90 second story about a real process, person, or place. Submit the master, captions, transcript, thumbnail, rights/provenance note, delivery specification, QC checklist, and a 300-word reflection.

  • The story must make one verifiable claim and show the evidence supporting it.
  • Speech must remain intelligible on headphones and a small speaker.
  • Captions must be edited by a human and checked with the caption tool.
  • The final export must be watched and heard from beginning to end.
  • The reflection must identify one creative compromise and one technical limitation.
