Alan Archibald Campbell-Swinton (1863โ€“1930) published a letter in Nature in June 1908 proposing fully electronic television using cathode ray tubes at both the camera and the receiver, and elaborated the scheme in a 1911 presidential address. It is, in outline, the system the world eventually adopted. He never attempted to build it, and said openly that the photoelectric camera it required did not exist.

The problem as it stood

By 1908 mechanical scanning was the only approach anyone was pursuing, and its limits were already visible: a spinning disc large enough for good resolution becomes physically unmanageable, and the light reaching a single cell through a small hole is vanishingly faint. Shelford Bidwell had published a sceptical assessment of television's prospects.

What he actually did

Campbell-Swinton replied in Nature that the problem should be attacked electronically rather than mechanically: two cathode ray tubes, one at each end, their beams deflected in synchronism by oscillating magnetic fields, with the camera tube using a photoelectric mosaic screen so that each element's charge could be read off as the beam swept past.

How it worked

The insight is that a cathode ray beam is a scanner with no moving parts. It can be steered far faster and more precisely than any disc, in any pattern, with no inertia. Using one at the camera end as well as the display end removes the mechanical bottleneck entirely โ€” which is exactly the step that made high-definition television possible.

The 1908 letter and 1911 address circulated widely among people who did build television. Zworykin and others cited it; it framed electronic scanning as the goal at a point when nearly all practical effort was mechanical. The mosaic camera target he described is recognisably the ancestor of the iconoscope.

He remained a consulting electrical engineer and a Fellow of the Royal Society, wrote and lectured on television's prospects, and left the building to others. He lived to see Baird's mechanical demonstrations but died in 1930, before electronic television reached public service.
