Overview

Boris Lvovich Rosing (1869โ€“1933) patented and then demonstrated, in St Petersburg between 1907 and 1911, the first television system to use a cathode ray tube as the receiving device โ€” mechanical mirror-drum scanning at the camera end, electronic display at the other. Among his students was Vladimir Zworykin. Rosing was arrested in 1931 and exiled; he died in Arkhangelsk in 1933.

The problem as it stood

In the first decade of the twentieth century every television proposal used mechanical scanning at both ends, and the receiving end was the worse problem: a mechanical shutter or disc had to be bright, fast and perfectly synchronised at once.

What he actually did

Rosing kept a mirror-drum scanner at the camera but replaced the mechanical receiver with a Braun tube, modulating the electron beam with the signal from the photocell. In May 1911 he demonstrated the transmission and reception of simple geometric shapes โ€” the first television images ever displayed electronically.

How it worked

Light from the scene was chopped into a sequence by rotating mirror drums and fell on a photoelectric cell, whose output modulated the brightness of the cathode ray beam while magnetic coils deflected it in step with the drums. The picture was crude and static, but the architecture โ€” mechanical camera, electronic display โ€” is precisely the hybrid that Takayanagi would use to better effect fifteen years later.

Rosing demonstrated that the receiving end of television could be solved electronically long before the camera end was. He also taught Vladimir Zworykin at the St Petersburg Technological Institute, and Zworykin worked in his laboratory โ€” a direct line from Rosing's bench to the iconoscope and the kinescope at RCA.

Rosing continued teaching after the revolution. In 1931 he was arrested in connection with a political case and exiled to Arkhangelsk, where he died in 1933. His work went largely unmentioned in Soviet accounts for years afterwards and was slow to reach Western histories.

Rosing suffers from two compounding erasures: he published in Russian, and he died in internal exile with his reputation politically compromised.
