Charles Paulson Ginsburg (1920โ1992) led the six-person Ampex team that produced the first practical videotape recorder, the quadruplex VR-1000, demonstrated in 1956. The problem as it stood
Recorded bandwidth depends on how fast the tape passes the head. Audio needs a few kilohertz and works at 15 or 30 inches per second. Video needs several megahertz, which would demand tape speeds of hundreds of inches per second โ miles of tape for a single programme, at impossible cost and mechanical risk.
What he actually did
Ginsburg's team โ including Ray Dolby, Fred Pfost, Shelby Henderson, Alex Maxey and Charles Anderson โ decoupled head-to-tape speed from tape transport speed by mounting four heads on a drum spinning rapidly across a slowly moving two-inch tape.
How it worked
What matters is the relative speed between head and tape, not how fast the tape moves through the machine. Spinning heads transversely across a slow tape gives an enormous effective writing speed while consuming tape at a manageable rate. Each head writes a short track across the tape's width; the four hand over in sequence to form a continuous signal.
What it made possible
The end of live-only television. Programmes could be recorded, edited, repeated and shipped, and the American networks could serve multiple time zones without performing everything twice. Essentially all subsequent video recording, including helical scan and domestic VCRs, uses rotating heads.
What happened to him
He remained at Ampex, becoming a vice-president, and received the National Medal of Technology among many honours. He died in 1992.

The first practical videotape recorder, Ampex's quadruplex VR-1000, was developed by a team of six led by Charles Ginsburg.
