Rotary scanning only works if you have heads that can resolve megahertz, survive being dragged across tape at high speed, and be manufactured consistently in sets of four with matched characteristics.

Pfost developed the head design and the ferrite core work that made this possible, building much of it by hand. Matched sets of four heads had to hand over between tracks without producing visible banding in the picture.

Resolution depends on the head gap: a narrower gap resolves higher frequencies but produces less output and wears faster. Ferrite, a ceramic magnetic material, is harder and has better high-frequency behaviour than laminated metal. Getting four heads matched closely enough that the eye cannot see the changeover is the practical achievement.

The VR-1000 as a shippable product rather than a laboratory demonstration. Head technology remained the limiting component of video recording for decades, and every improvement in format density ran through it.
