An invention does not become a medium on its own. It needs manufacturing, a distribution network, a business model, an agreed technical standard, and enough capital to survive the years before revenue. In the 1920s and 30s nobody had built that apparatus for television.
What he actually did
Sarnoff built RCA into a vertically integrated operation spanning research, patents, manufacturing and โ through NBC โ broadcasting itself. He funded Zworykin's laboratory, pursued Farnsworth through the patent office, pushed the FCC on standards, and staged television's public arrival at the 1939 World's Fair.
How it worked
The mechanism was patent pooling plus standards capture. Own or license the essential patents, manufacture the receivers, own the network that gives people a reason to buy them, and get the technical standard set where your technology is strongest. RCA's colour system was adopted as the NTSC standard in 1953 over CBS's incompatible field-sequential system, largely because it worked with existing monochrome sets.
What it made possible
American television as a mass medium on a single compatible standard, quickly. The same apparatus that delivered that also meant individual inventors could rarely capture the value of their work โ Farnsworth being the clearest case, and Armstrong in radio the most bitter.
What happened to him
He led RCA until 1970 and died in 1971, one of the most powerful figures in twentieth century American media. His reputation is genuinely mixed: an unmatched builder of institutions, and ruthless with the inventors whose work those institutions absorbed.
Where the credit landed
Sarnoff's own most-repeated story โ that he single-handedly relayed news of the Titanic in 1912 โ is substantially embellished. He is included here not for what he invented but because the corpus is dishonest without him: the assignment mechanism that erased Dickson, Blumlein and the EMI team is corporate policy, and Sarnoff is the clearest example of the person setting that policy.
