
Overview
Donald Buchla (1937β2016) developed voltage-controlled modular synthesis on the West Coast from 1963, in parallel with Moog and independently. He deliberately omitted the piano keyboard, using capacitive touch plates and sequencers instead, on the grounds that a keyboard imposes equal temperament and a note-based conception of music on an instrument that need not have either.

The problem as it stood
Electronic music composers at the San Francisco Tape Music Center wanted an instrument, and the available approach β tape manipulation β was slow. What that instrument should look like was entirely open.
What he actually did
Commissioned by Morton Subotnick and Ramon Sender, Buchla built the Series 100 with voltage-controlled modules, touch-sensitive capacitive plates, and sequencers as primary controllers. Subotnick's Silver Apples of the Moon, made on it, was the first electronic work commissioned by a record label.
How it worked
Technically similar to Moog's approach and philosophically opposed. Without a keyboard there are no discrete notes by default; pitch is continuous, and sequencers and random sources generate material rather than a performer playing tunes. It is designed for making sound, not for playing songs.
What it made possible
A whole tradition of American electronic music β Subotnick, Suzanne Ciani, Γliane Radigue on related instruments β concerned with evolving timbre and process rather than melody. The "West Coast synthesis" approach remains distinct and is actively built today.
What happened to him
He continued designing unconventional instruments and controllers for fifty years, always commercially marginal relative to keyboard synthesisers. He died in 2016.
