Overview

Robert Arthur Moog (1934โ€“2005) built voltage-controlled synthesiser modules from 1964 and standardised the interface: one volt per octave for pitch, with modules patched freely by cable. That convention, rather than any individual circuit, is what made modular synthesis a system instead of a collection of devices.

The problem as it stood

Electronic music studios were assemblages of incompatible equipment โ€” oscillators, filters, tape machines โ€” each with its own controls and no common way to make one govern another. Composition meant tape editing because real-time control was impossible.

What he actually did

Moog built oscillators, filters and amplifiers whose parameters were controlled by an applied voltage, and fixed the pitch relationship at one volt per octave. Any module's output could then control any other module's input through a patch cable.

One volt per octave is exponential โ€” each additional volt doubles frequency โ€” which matches how pitch is perceived, so a linear control voltage produces musically even intervals. Once the convention is fixed, an envelope generator can control a filter, a low-frequency oscillator can control pitch, and a keyboard is simply another voltage source.

The synthesiser as an instrument rather than a studio installation, and an ecosystem of interoperable modules. His ladder filter became a defining sound. The Minimoog of 1970 made a performable version cheap enough for working musicians.

He lost control of his company in the 1970s, worked for others including Kurzweil, and eventually regained the Moog name. He died in 2005.

Don Buchla was developing voltage-controlled synthesis simultaneously and independently on the West Coast, with different conventions and a different philosophy; the two are best read as parallel traditions rather than as a priority contest.
