George Eastman (1854โ1932) built the Eastman Kodak Company around flexible roll film and the idea that photography should be simple enough for anyone. His transparent celluloid roll film, from around 1889, is the material precondition for cinema: no motion picture camera is possible without a long, thin, flexible, dimensionally stable transparent strip made to a consistent standard.

The problem as it stood
Photography meant glass plates: heavy, fragile, individually handled, and impossible to run through a mechanism at speed. Everyone working toward moving pictures was blocked by the same thing โ there was no medium you could pull past a lens continuously.
What he actually did
Eastman moved from dry plates to paper roll film and then, around 1889, to transparent celluloid roll film, and built the manufacturing to produce it consistently and cheaply. He also built the business model โ sell the camera cheaply, sell the film forever โ and the consumer proposition that followed from it.
How it worked
The demands are unforgiving. The base must be transparent, flexible enough to wind, strong enough to take perforations and repeated acceleration, and dimensionally stable so that frames register identically. Emulsion must be uniform along the whole length. Meeting all of that repeatably at industrial scale is a manufacturing achievement rather than a laboratory one.
What it made possible
Everything in the first half of this corpus. Le Prince was limited by paper base; Dickson could standardise 35mm because consistent celluloid stock existed to standardise. Amateur photography, newsreels, and the entire film industry rest on the same material.
What happened to him
Kodak became one of the largest companies in the world and Eastman gave away most of his fortune. In chronic pain from a spinal condition, he took his own life in 1932, leaving a note reading "To my friends: my work is done. Why wait?"

Eastman is credited as a businessman more than as a technologist, and the substrate is treated as a given rather than as an invention. The patent position on flexible film was also contested โ Hannibal Goodwin filed for a transparent nitrocellulose photographic film before Eastman's product reached market, and litigation over it ran for decades. Why the base material sets the limits
Film base has to survive being accelerated and stopped 24 times a second under tension, hold perforation geometry to a fraction of a millimetre, stay flat in the gate, and not shrink between shooting and printing. Nitrate base met most of these and was also dangerously flammable, which is why so much early cinema burned; acetate safety film replaced it. The physical properties of the strip determined what mechanisms were possible.
