Overview

Kenjiro Takayanagi (1899–1990) displayed a television image on a cathode ray tube on 25 December 1926 at Hamamatsu Technical High School — the katakana character イ, at 40 lines. It is the first electronic television display. The camera end still used a Nipkow disc, so the system was a hybrid; the receiving end was fully electronic, months before Farnsworth transmitted his first line in San Francisco. He is rarely included in English-language accounts of television's invention.

The problem as it stood

In 1926 mechanical television was being demonstrated in Britain and America, and its limits were already apparent at the display end: a neon lamp behind a spinning disc is dim, coarse and mechanically fragile. Rosing had shown a CRT receiver in 1911, but nobody had built a system around one that produced a recognisable image.

What he actually did

Takayanagi, then a young instructor with almost no budget, built a system with a Nipkow disc and photoelectric cell at the camera and a cathode ray tube at the receiver, and on 25 December 1926 displayed the katakana character イ at 40 lines. He had begun the work in 1924 after reading about television in a French magazine.

How it worked

The disc scanned the character; the photocell output was amplified and used to modulate the CRT beam, deflected in synchronism with the disc. The critical engineering was in the amplifier and the synchronisation: a CRT display only beats a mechanical one if the beam can be driven accurately and brightly enough, and that meant building amplification that did not yet come off a shelf.

What it made possible

Takayanagi went on to a fully electronic system with his own camera tube by 1935, and after the war led television development at Japan Victor Company. He is a founding figure of the Japanese television and video industry, whose later work runs through NHK's high-definition research and the consumer video business.

He built Japan's television research programme, worked at NHK and then JVC, and lived until 1990 — long enough to see the industry he helped found dominate global consumer electronics. In Japan he is well known as "the father of Japanese television".
