Peter Carl Goldmark (1906–1977) directed CBS Laboratories through the development of the microgroove 33β…“ rpm long-playing record, introduced in 1948, and also developed CBS's field-sequential colour television system. His credit for the LP is contested from an unusual direction: CBS's own president, William Paley, wrote that Goldmark did not do the work himself.

The problem as it stood

A 78 rpm disc held about four minutes a side, so any substantial work meant a stack of discs and interruptions every few minutes. Longer playing needed a finer groove, slower rotation, and a lighter pickup that would not destroy either.

Goldmark led the CBS Laboratories programme that combined 33β…“ rpm rotation, a microgroove roughly a third the width of the 78 groove, vinyl instead of shellac, variable groove pitch, and a lightweight pickup β€” producing over twenty minutes a side.

The pieces interlock. Finer grooves need a smaller stylus and lower tracking force or they wear instantly; vinyl is quieter and tougher than shellac; variable pitch packs grooves closer during quiet passages. William Bachman engineered the heated stylus and variable-pitch cutting, and RenΓ© Snepvangers the lightweight pickup.
