Walter Weber (1907–1944), working at the German Reichs-Rundfunk-Gesellschaft with Hans-Joachim von Braunmühl, established high-frequency AC bias for magnetic tape around 1940. The problem as it stood

Magnetic material does not respond linearly to an applied field: at low levels it barely responds at all. Recording audio directly therefore distorts quiet passages severely, which is why early tape sounded acceptable for speech and poor for music.

Weber and von Braunmühl added a strong high-frequency signal, far above the audible range, to the audio being recorded. The improvement in noise and distortion was dramatic and immediate.

The bias signal keeps the magnetic material in constant motion across its transfer curve, so the audio modulates a system already in a linear region rather than struggling out of the dead zone at low levels. Since the bias is far above the audible band it is not heard and is filtered on playback. Every analogue tape machine ever built uses it.

Broadcast-quality tape. German radio was transmitting recordings so good that Allied listeners could not tell them from live performance, which is what alerted engineers abroad to how far the technology had advanced.

AC bias was arrived at more than once — Marvin Camras invented it independently in the United States, and there are earlier partial anticipations in Japan and elsewhere. Weber's work was inside a state broadcaster in wartime Germany, so it was institutional, classified and then confiscated. He died at 37 and the wider industry inherited his result without inheriting his name.

Why the German tape machines were a shock

Allied monitoring services could usually tell a recording from a live broadcast by its noise and distortion. From about 1941 German music broadcasts became indistinguishable, at hours when live performance was implausible.
