The problem as it stood
Scott had shown sound could be inscribed. The unmade step was reversal: driving a stylus from the inscribed trace to recreate the original vibration.
What he actually did
Cros described exactly that reversal in a paper deposited under seal in April 1877, including the idea of converting the trace into a durable metal groove by photoengraving so it could be played repeatedly. The paper was opened and read publicly that December, by which point Edison had a working machine.

On paper, correctly. Cros identified both halves — inscribe, then retrace — and understood that a soot trace is too fragile to survive playback, proposing a metal groove instead. That is a genuinely non-obvious refinement and closer to how discs actually ended up working than Edison's tinfoil.
