Emile Berliner (1851โ1929) patented the gramophone in 1887, using a flat disc with a lateral-cut groove instead of Edison's vertical-cut cylinder. The disc could be electroplated into a metal master and stamped in quantity, which turned recorded sound from a curiosity into a manufacturing industry. He had earlier developed a carbon microphone transmitter.
