
Overview
Thomas Alva Edison (1847โ1931) demonstrated the phonograph in December 1877: sound recorded as indentations in tinfoil on a rotating cylinder, and replayed from the same indentations. It is the first device to do both. His West Orange laboratory also produced the Kinetograph and Kinetoscope, and operated a credit and patent policy that assigned the work of its staff to Edison โ a pattern this corpus meets repeatedly.

The problem as it stood
Scott could inscribe sound and Cros could describe replaying it. Nobody had built a machine that did both, and there was no obvious commercial reason to want one โ Edison's own first list of applications led with dictation, not music.
What he actually did
Working from telegraph-repeater and telephone experiments, Edison had a machine built in which a stylus indented tinfoil wrapped around a grooved cylinder, and a second stylus followed the indentations to drive a diaphragm. The first demonstration reportedly recorded "Mary had a little lamb".
How it worked
Vertical-cut recording: the stylus moves up and down, denting the foil more or less deeply as pressure varies. Playback reverses it. Tinfoil was a poor medium โ it wore out almost immediately and could not be duplicated โ which is why wax cylinders and then Berliner's lateral-cut discs superseded it.
